About

I studied Art and Design at The University of Leeds and have been painting ever since. However, I would describe myself as a self-taught painter. My work is constantly evolving. The main themes I explore are florals, gardens and anything botanical!

But ultimately, florals are just the starting point. My work isn’t about creating an exact likeness of a flower — it’s about what painting them allows me to do with the medium itself. Flowers give me a structure to work from, but then the process becomes about following the movement of the paint, responding to the gestures, the brushstrokes, the surprises, and the happy accidents along the way. Oil paint, in particular, has this unpredictable, luscious quality that I love. The way it moves, layers, and mixes on the canvas is exciting to me. Floral subjects give me a playground for exploring all of that — They give me just enough structure to get started, but still leave plenty of room to be loose and experiment. My work becomes more about the response to the paint on the canvas and the happy accidents along the way.

My studio is located at ‘WASPS, HANSON STREET’. If you are local to Glasgow and would like to come and visit, please email me at samanthamccubbin1@hotmail.co.uk
